How to ensure a successful school return
As summer winds down and the first hints of autumn fill the air, children all across the country are preparing for the big return to school. For many, it's a time of excitement—seeing friends again, meeting new teachers, perhaps even starting in a new school but for many it can also be a time of mixed emotions. Whether it’s the anxious anticipation of starting Year 1, the thrill of entering a new year filled with opportunities, or the bittersweet goodbye to summer's freedom, each child (and indeed parent) has a different view of this annual family milestone.
In the last few days of August, the familiar sight on the high street of overwhelmed parents and fed-up children is a tell-tale sign of the impending school year. But while they rush to replenish stationary supplies and queue to have new shoes fitted, there may be one item on the agenda that is often forgotten or thrown together at the last minute: the gym bag.
Since the pandemic, Physical Education (PE) has become an even more vital part of the school curriculum for several reasons. Primarily it promotes physical health and fitness, which is crucial in combating the rising levels of childhood obesity and related health issues. As well as the physical benefits, regular exercise whether through PE classes, games or outdoor break times, has been proven to enhance mental well-being, which is why it is advocated strongly by psychologists and experts in childhood development. Engaging in physical activities can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while also boosting self-esteem and mood. In today’s fast-paced world, where students often face significant academic and social pressures, this is crucial.
Of course, no child will want to return to the classroom with sweaty skin and tangled hair and so this is where the inclusion of carefully selected of personal grooming products in a child's gym bag can be incredibly helpful in their day-to-day school life.
As well as the stalwarts of trainers and a PE kit, a useful gym bag should also include:
1. Hair brush: For effortless detangling, we love the newly-launched Tangle Teezer Original Plant brush. Made from 85% sustainably sourced castor beans, the Plant Brush still features the brand's unique two-tiered teeth technology, designed to effortlessly detangle and care for your hair.
2. Dandydill Way Detangling Spray: Our light, non-oily, silicone-free children's hair de-tangling spray is designed to keep all hair types shiny and knot-free. This brilliant hair de-tangler spray can be spritzed on the hair throughout the day to keep it smooth and free from knots.
3. Dandydill Way Liquid Powder: Our gentle deodorising lotion is designed for application on multiple areas of the body, offering an effective solution for managing odour while prioritising skin health. Liquid Powder, our natural, whole-body deodorant, features a unique blend of ingredients that address odour concerns safely and age appropriate for sensitive young skin. We are committed to using natural ingredients because we believe that effective personal care should not compromise health. A key ingredient in our formula is a natural extract from red algae, which works by breaking down the cell walls of odour-causing bacteria, neutralising the source of odour before unpleasant smells develop. This approach respects the skin's natural biome, avoiding the drawbacks of antibacterial agents that can disrupt both harmful and beneficial bacteria. In addition, we use tapioca starch instead of talc to absorb wetness. Known for its hypoallergenic properties, tapioca starch is a safer alternative to talc, which has faced concerns over potential health risks. It effectively manages moisture without clogging pores. This dual approach—neutralising bacteria and controlling wetness—ensures that odour is managed naturally and safely. Another bonus is the lotion can be safely re-applied as needed throughout the day to maintain comfort and freshness.
4. Water Bottle: Ask any nutritionist and they will extol the virtues of youngsters drinking water (as opposed to juice) so it's always wise to keep a reusable bottle close nearby. We love Klean Kanteen's plastic-free kid’s water bottles. The smaller bottles have a leak-proof sippy cap, which is easy to drink from and fits perfectly in little hands.
5. Lip Balm: In the UK's changeable weather, this is essential. For youngsters, it can protect their sensitive lips from chapping and dryness caused by harsh weather and indoor heating. Chapped lips can be painful and distracting, making it hard to focus in class. Regular use of lip balm keeps lips moisturised, prevents discomfort, and encourages good self-care habits.
6. Tissues: Including a packet of tissues will ensure children can handle unexpected messes, runny noses, or sneezes, helping them to stay clean and presentable throughout the day. This also promotes good hygiene by allowing kids to wipe their hands or faces and prevent the spread of germs.
7. Sunscreen and sun hat or cap: Especially in the early days of the new school year, the sun can still be strong and children can be at risk from harmful UV rays during outdoor activities. Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn and reduces the risk of long-term skin damage and skin cancer. Regular application throughout the day, especially during extended outdoor play, ensures that children stay protected even when they're away from home. Carrying sunscreen teaches kids the importance of sun safety and self-care in their daily routine.
Naturally, while comprehensive and well-stocked school and gym bags will ensure that your child can confidently meet their personal needs at school, there can still be tears and tantrums stemming from the anxiety as they are primed to return to the school routine.
Here are seven useful, expert tips on how to make the return to school as stress-free as possible for everyone.
1. Establish a Routine Early: Start adjusting your child's sleep and wake times a week before school begins. Gradually shift bedtimes and morning routines to match the school schedule. This helps your child adapt to the new schedule more smoothly and reduces morning stress. Consistent routines also provide a sense of stability and security, easing anxiety about the transition.
2. Organise School Supplies in Advance: Involve your child in organising their school supplies well before the first day. Create a checklist of necessary items and set up a designated area for them. Having all supplies ready and organised reduces last-minute scrambling and helps your child feel prepared and excited. It also teaches them organisational skills and responsibility.
3. Plan and Practice the Morning Routine: Rehearse the entire morning routine with your child, including waking up, getting dressed, and having breakfast. This practice helps identify and address any potential issues and makes the process smoother. By practising, children become familiar with the routine, which can reduce anxiety and help them feel more confident about heading to school.
4. Set Up a Positive Learning Environment at Home: Create a designated study area at home that is quiet, well-lit, and free from distractions. Equip it with necessary supplies and ensure it’s tidy and organised. A dedicated space for homework and reading encourages a positive attitude toward schoolwork and helps children focus better on their tasks, contributing to their overall academic success.
5. Communicate with Teachers: Reach out to your child’s teachers before school starts to discuss any concerns or special needs. Establishing open communication helps build a supportive relationship and ensures that teachers are aware of any individual requirements. This proactive approach can ease your child's transition and create a smoother, more supportive educational experience.
6. Encourage Open Discussions About School: Talk to your child about their feelings regarding the return to school. Encourage them to share any worries or excitement they may have. Listening and providing reassurance can help alleviate anxiety. Positive reinforcement and discussing the fun aspects of school can shift their focus from fear to anticipation.
7. Keep Healthy Habits Consistent: Reinforce healthy habits such as balanced meals, regular physical activity, and sufficient sleep. A nutritious diet and regular exercise support overall well-being and can improve concentration and mood. Maintaining these habits ensures that your child is physically and mentally prepared for the demands of the school day, promoting a successful and stress-free transition.
